Latrell Mitchell has urged Jack Wighton to consider a shock switch to play alongside him and Cody Walker at South Sydney, claiming a premiership is the last piece of the puzzle for one of the game’s most decorated players.

In the same week Wighton turned the NRL player market upside down when he said he would field offers from rival clubs, Mitchell said the Rabbitohs should be a potential landing spot for the Raiders star.

It’s unlikely the Rabbitohs would have the salary-cap space to accommodate Wighton, who will command offers close to $1 million a season, but it didn’t stop Mitchell from making his case.

“I would love him at Souths,” Mitchell said. “I would love Jack outside me. It would be another element. But we don’t have a sombrero. I want Jack to make his own decision and do it for his kids and his partner. That’s all that matters – to be happy.

“We would go to that next level. We’re doing all right at the moment but like I said, Jack will make his decision. I have met [Raiders coach] Ricky [Stuart] and he is a genuine bloke. I think they will work something out. Canberra is a really good club.

“[But] I think we would suit him and work around him.”

Mitchell and Wighton share an incredibly close bond through years of representing Australia, NSW and the Indigenous All-Stars.

Their friendship remains undiminished despite the pair’s arrest for allegedly fighting in a public place in Canberra after Wighton’s 30th birthday celebration last month. The pair have pleaded not guilty to the charges and claim they were having a friendly wrestle.
