Police said they tasered the woman because she "posed a significant threat to the public." (Supplied)

Shocking footage has revealed the moment a woman brandishing a knife in the middle of a busy street in Sydney’s Inner West was tasered by police.

Just after 1pm yesterday, the 42-year-old was filmed walking in the middle of Victoria Street in Burwood wielding a knife.

The vision shows at least four police officers surrounding her and they can be heard telling her to drop her weapon as she stood outside a busy café.

“Drop it, get down on the ground,” officers can be heard saying.

When the woman didn’t comply, they tasered her.

The footage show the woman freeze as the taser hits her, before she falls backward onto the ground below.

Police told 9news.com.au the woman was posing a threat to passers-by.

“She was tasered as it was deemed she posed a significant threat to the public,” a spokeswoman said.

The woman was taken to Concord Hospital for a mental health assessment.
