St Kilda coach Alan Richardson credited Steven for standing up in a tough season.

“Jack really led the way in the first half of this season. While we were inconsistent as a team, Jack continued to deliver week-in, week-out. It’s testament to the type of player and leader he is,” Richardson said.

“Jack sets a great example for our young group and is incredibly important for what we’re trying to build at our footy club.”

Richardson also praised Ross and Steele for their efforts in 2018. Ross led the Saints for disposals with 632 while Steele, in his second season since being traded from Greater Western Sydney, became a highly effective tagger.

“Seb backed up his 2017 season with another really consistent year,” Richardson said.

“He’s such an influential leader among our group and that will only grow.

“Jack really made a statement with his second half of the year. He took on some of the game’s best and flourished in his new role.

“He was outstanding in shutting down the likes of Ollie Wines, Callan Ward and Tom Mitchell, and he’s going to be a big part of our midfield for many years to come.”

Forward Jade Gresham finished fourth and was named best emerging player after kicking 35 goals to top the Saints’ goalkicking, while skipper Jarryn Geary rounded out the top five.

The struggles of several of St Kilda’s regulars this was underlined by the fact youngster Daniel McKenzie finished in the top 10 despite playing just 13 senior games.

Leadership group member Jack Newnes missed the top 10 even though he played every game.

Steele meanwhile picked up the Lenny Hayes player trademark award, while Dylan Roberton, who missed most of the season after collapsing in a game against Geelong, won the Robert Harvey best clubman award.
