2. Prop Dillon Lewis is one to watch

The tighthead isn't the biggest unit going around (although the Welsh scrum clearly had the upper hand) but he embodies what Wales are trying to achieve.

He's got genuine skills, can pass and carry and is strong over the ball. In fact, all of the Welsh front-rowers can play, and the Welsh are clearly trying to develop an all-court game in which members of the tight five can all contribute around the field.

The Wallabies are clearly trying to develop this part of their game as well but they will have to be aware that the stereotypical image of northern hemisphere props, waddling from set piece to piece, is outdated. Lewis is just as likely to pop up in midfield as a ball player.

3. Angus Gardner was damned either way

The Australian referee found himself exactly where he didn't want to be at the end of the England v South Africa game - in the spotlight.

His decision not to penalise Owen Farrell for a questionable tackle on Andre Esterhuizen produced howls of protest from Springboks fans and commentators - not that that is anything new.

But we are fickle bunch. Gardner was criticised in June for sending off Frenchman Benjamin Fail against the All Blacks in June for a clumsy aerial challenge. The charge against Gardner then was that he was refereeing to the letter of the law rather than for a feel for the game.

Now, he has tried to make a big decision that takes account of the fact that rugby is a collision sport where not all borderline contacts are malicious - and he still cops grief.

The Farrell decision could have gone either way but Gardner had an excellent game. And do we not want referees to makes calls on what they see on the field, rather than by staring at replays on a big screen in an attempt to find a 'clear and obvious' ruling in a game that is all about interpretation?

4. Underdone Ben Te'o struggles

The former Queensland Origin rep had a reputation as a bit of a hit man in league but he endured a difficult afternoon defensively against the Springboks.

He was bounced off on a number of occasions, by both Springboks No 12 Damian de Allende and No 10 Handre Pollard. On attack he was virtually unsighted with England failing to spend a single second in the Springboks' 22 in the first half.

However, there were mitigating circumstances - Te'o is well short of game time and a favourite of England coach Eddie Jones it is likely that he will keep his place for a showdown against Sonny Bill Williams.

5. Springboks self-destruct

How many ways did the Springboks beat themselves at Twickenham? By a conservative count, at least four.

First, Malcolm Marx's lineout throwing fell part. His three overthrows - some were not even close to his target - were hugely expensive.

Second, they failed to take advantage of Maro Itoje's 10 minutes in the bin (incidentally, Itoje was excellent).

Third, their replacements strategy was odd with Elton Jantjies given just five or six minutes at the end when they were crying out for a tactical change before then.

And fourth, when they had the chance to go for a drop goal in the last five minutes they seemed strangely reticent, with replacement second-rower going for one carry too many and having the ball stripped by Farrell.

They were badly affected when Eben Etzebeth had to depart with an injury early in the second half but this still was a backward step after their exploits against the All Blacks.
