Australia is without a men's representative in the fourth round at Melbourne Park after the emerging Alexei Popyrin joined Alex de Minaur and Alex Bolt as Australian Open third-round casualties.
But 19-year-old Popyrin, a wildcard recipient, showed just why Tennis Australia took a punt on him after he pushed his opponent, French 28th seed Lucas Pouille, all the way in a tough five-setter that lasted three hours and 43 minutes.
Popyrin fought back from a two-sets-to-love deficit, eventually losing 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 6-7 (10-12), 4-6, 6-3, before a pro-Australian crowd on Margaret Court Arena.
