A powerful and big-striding filly screaming out for more ground is ready to break her maiden third time up at Thursday’s feature Grafton meeting on the NSW Northern Rivers.
Rocknavar put the writing on the wall second-up at Ballina, covering early ground and copping a check in the straight before charging through the line late.
That was 1300m just under three weeks back, and up to 1700m on Thursday at set weights in a Maiden Plate (Race 5) on a more spacious and suitable track should be ideal for a horse that will ultimately make a very good benchmark staying type.
Outside of consistent local mare Gratuitous, who has drawn a nice gate, there appears little opposition. Rocknavar, who had already been backed in early markets, should be able to settle back with cover and come with a barnstorming run from the 400m.
Speaking of settling back and finishing hard, a lightly raced six-year-old named after a Scottish village also fits that bill.
