The Bangladesh cricket team escaped a “frightening” active shooter situation before calling off the final match of the team’s tour of New Zealand.

Local police confirmed there were multiple fatalities after shootings at two mosques in the city on Friday.

Opening batsmen Tamim Iqbal Khan also confirmed he and his team meats were safe, adding the experience was “frightening”.

The team had been due to play their final Test against the New Zealand Black Caps. But both sides had made the decision to call off the final match.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of those affected by the shocking situation in Christchurch,” the New Zealand cricket team said. “A joint decision between NZC and the BCB has been made to cancel the Hagley Oval Test. Again both teams and support staff groups are safe.”
