The 2019 iMac is a solid update to Apple’s desktop Mac for families and corporate customers.

The overall design is unchanged; the familiar all-in-one aluminium and glass body returns, but there’s nothing wrong with that. This look of iMac, introduced back in 2012, is as beautiful and functional as it was seven years ago.

And iMacs are true workhorses. In my day job we have just over a thousand iMacs on desks, and hardware faults are virtually non-existent. It’s particularly impressive walking into a classroom with 50 iMacs running Adobe Premiere, After Effects, or a similarly taxing application, and barely hearing a noise from the computers. In fact all versions of the iMac have been so reliable, we only just retired our own 2012 model. After seven years of constant use it was handed down to a friend, and is now still in daily use as a family hub.

The last upgrade to the iMac, back in 2017, was all about improvements to the display. Apple introduced a wide P3 colour gamut and upped the brightness, matching the displays found in the company’s Macbooks and iPads. Two years later these displays are still industry leading, and look better than the best standalone monitors from Dell and HP.
