"I asked if he needed a break or some water and he said 'no'," the friend, whose identity has been suppressed, said.

"He said he was just going to keep a strong mind and push through it.

"He thought he’d get through it by staying calm."

The friend said he had asked Mr Brosnan if he wanted to go to the medical tent to "make sure he was all right" but he refused.

The court heard Mr Brosnan was given 3½ MDMA capsules at about 5.30pm and received three more some time later.

Later in the night Mr Brosnan raised seven fingers to indicate to a friend he had taken seven capsules, the court heard.

The court heard one of the pills Mr Brosnan had bought that night remained in his bum bag and, on testing, was found to be 76 per cent MDMA, a very high purity.

Detective Inspector Karl Leis, who investigated Mr Brosnan's death, said after the teenager collapsed at the railway station at about 12.30am a friend had told him the reveller had consumed up to nine capsules.

The court heard earlier in the night Mr Brosnan was performing shows for other patrons with illuminated gloves, which he may have earned more pills for doing.

The friend said sometimes people offered a reward for those shows, which could be water or "something more".

He said Mr Brosnan appeared disorientated as they walked to the train station, and once they arrived "he started to deteriorate a lot more".

"We found him talking to some random people and they didn’t know what he was saying," the friend said.

"We got him to where we were all standing and then he collapsed."

The court heard Mr Brosnan vomited and went in and out of consciousness before being taken by ambulance to Concord Hospital where he died at 3am.

Deputy State Coroner Harriet Grahame is examining the circumstances of Mr Brosnan's death as well as those of Alex Ross-King, 19, Joshua Tam, 22, Nathan Tran, 18, Joseph Pham, 23, and Diana Nguyen, 18, who all died after consuming MDMA at NSW music festivals between December 2017 and January this year.

Counsel assisting the coroner, Peggy Dwyer, said during her opening address that Mr Brosnan had been described as a "bright and very kind" person who had been accepted to study at the Conservatorium of Sydney.

She said Mr Brosnan's friends disclosed he began using MDMA in 2014 and had progressed to taking between five and 10 doses of MDMA on a night out.
