The officer could be heard in the bodycam footage yelling, "get on the ground" before a member of the public helped corner the man near the entrance of an apartment block on Ferny Avenue.

"Thank you so much," the police officer said to his helper after they made the arrest and back up arrived.

"No worries. I saw him running and I thought I better join in," the man said with a big smile.

The officer gave him a pat on the back and shook his hand while he tried to catch his breath.

"I'm so glad you helped me. I really appreciate it," the officer said.

The 40-year-old man from Labrador was charged with one count each of possession of a dangerous drug and obstructing police.

He will appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.
