Phillip Island: Maverick Vinales has continued his barnstorming run at the Australian MotoGP by recording the fastest time in a third free practice marred by high winds and rain at Phillip Island.

The factory Yamaha star topped the standings in all three free practice sessions to storm into Saturday afternoon's second qualifying run, which will determine the final grid for Sunday's 27-lap race.

Local hope Jack Miller (Pramac Racing Ducati) is also into second qualifying after clocking the fifth-fastest time in a practice session in which 11 of the 22 riders chose not to risk putting up a time in the wild weather.

Eight-time world champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) put Friday's drama, that included a minor collision with teammate Jorge Lorenzo, behind him to finish the session second quickest.

Italian superstar Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha) was one of the riders who stayed rugged up in their garages, with little to be gained in the treacherous conditions.
