An 84-year old man who fired shots at the Bayonne mosque in southern France on Monday had far-right connections, according to a police source

Two people were injured in the shooting, which happened about 2pm, local time, French radio station France Bleu said.

The radio station said the man was arrested close to his home in Bayonne, about 10 kilometres east of Biarritz. A firearm and a gas cannister were allegedly found in his car.

A separate source, familiar with the situation, said the shooter had been a candidate for Marine Le Pen's National Rally party back in 2015.
