In a year of drastic disruption to the international tennis circuit, Wimbledon was cancelled for the first time since 1945. And amid debate and scrutiny about maintaining the livelihood of professional tennis players, the historic grass-court major announced prizemoney will be distributed to 620 players who were set to take part at this year's cancelled tournament.

The WTA calendar is set to resume at a clay-court event at Palermo, Italy, in two weeks while the ATP season will relaunch in Washington in mid August. Tennis officials have also shifted another event - the Western and Southern Open normally held in Ohio – to the Flushing Meadows precinct in the week before the US Open.

One of the challenges for professional tennis players is trying to play two majors, in two different continents, close to each other. The French Open has been shifted to a new slot in the calendar in late September. One of the key lead-up events for Paris, the Madrid Open, will start the day after the US Open concludes.

Australian 22-year-old Priscilla Hon has expressed her concerns about the suitability of the US Open going ahead and Daria Gavrilova indicated it would be a “relief” if the tournament was cancelled.

“As much as I want to play @usopen … When US are getting 60000 cases a day still... how is this still going ahead!?,” tweeted Hon, who received a last-minute call-up to the main draw in New York last year as a lucky loser.

"Yes we all have a decision to make if @usopen does go ahead but at the same time we shouldn't be obligated to choose between our health and our earnings."

Gavrilova voiced her concern about the “tough decision” for tennis professionals.

“We have a choice. Personally I like to know that I have an opportunity to play and earn,” Gavrilova said on Twitter.

“But I feel like the players just don’t want to make a tough decision and maybe would feel a relief if the tournament is cancelled.”

World No. 43 Millman has hinted at his frustration with authorities’ efforts to kick-start the tennis season.

When it was announced that this year’s Davis Cup finals – originally scheduled for Madrid in November – would be cancelled, Millman tweeted: “It’s the inconsistencies that I find tedious. Two months before the Davis Cup was meant to be playing we are playing at the same venue in Madrid for the masters."

Popyrin, 20, is based in France and will focus on European events before the French Open. He also took part in Patrick Mouratoglou's Ultimate Tennis Showdown event in southern France this month, a 10-man event that featured top-10 players Italian Matteo Berrettini and Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas.
