Victoria was comfortably the most likely state to ask about a person's sports team rather than what they do for work (52 per cent of survey respondents), followed by NSW/ACT (47 per cent), Western Australia (44 per cent) and Queensland and Tasmania (40 per cent).
Victorians were also the most tactically minded sports fans, with 67 per cent of those surveyed saying they were "interested in sports strategy and tactics".
The Northern Territory and Tasmanian data was not included in the comparisons because their sample sizes were insufficient.
As the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread through Victoria and threatens to become more of a problem in NSW, Queensland has emerged as the home for AFL football.
Western Australia and South Australia have hosted games too, while NSW sides the Sydney Swans and GWS have had to move into Queensland this week because of tighter restrictions between the Sunshine State and NSW.
