I don't want to post links in here, but you will easily find it.
Not saying that Telegram is worse than Whatsapp, because is not (at least at data collecting). But it's not that great either when it comes to end-to-end encryption. Individual chats are not by default encrypted in Telegram. So basically any Telegram employee with enough permission can view any message. Or the authorities if they ask for it, etc. If you want to have encrypted messages in Telegram you need to manually do it by Secret chat.
Anyway, bottom line is that both Telegram and Whatsapp are bad if you truly value privacy. The only app good at this is Signal. But, is less known, and also very simplistic. I think just recently they added some sort of emojis for the messages.
