With the 2021 State of Origin series right around the corner and both squads to be finalised in the next 24 hours, it is time to check in with the latest team updates.

NEW SOUTH WALES BLUES

In Blues land, Cameron Murray and Isaah Yeo have escaped time on the sidelines despite being placed on report on Saturday.

It means both will be available for selection when NSW coach Brad Fittler names his squad on Sunday night.

Fittler confirmed on Channel 9’s Wide World of Sports that Yeo was part of the team.

The biggest conjecture surrounds who Fittler will select in the five-eighth jumper and he may have provided a hint on Sunday morning.

Fittler was asked whether Jarome Luai would be partnering halfback Nathan Cleary on WWOS.

“The one thing I did this morning,” he replied.

“I had the luxury of calling a couple of people who hadn’t played before, so I’ll leave it that.”

Blues selector Greg Alexander also confirmed on SEN 1170 that both Luai and Jack Wighton would be picked but did not detail what position they will play in.

Fittler crucially said “a couple of people” which means he confirmed there will be at least two debutants.

That places Panthers teammates Brian To’o, Liam Martin and Matt Burton in the frame.

That is considering most of the other positions in the Blues side that are locked in are all filled by players who have previously ran out in the Origin arena.

The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting To’o has been selected on the right wing, beating Daniel Tupou and Blake Ferguson to the spot.

Meanwhile, the Australian’s Brent Read reports that Damien Cook will be picked ahead of Apisai Koroisau alongside Souths teammates Murray and Latrell Mitchell.

It means Parramatta’s Nathan Brown and Clint Gutherson, Rabbitohs playmaker Cody Walker and Melbourne’s Dale Finucane could lose their spots.

Fittler also revealed that he spoke to both James Tedesco and Josh Addo-Carr about potential injury concerns.

“I spoke to James Tedesco last night,” he said.

“He said he was speaking to Josh Morris about this particular injury. He said it would hurt for a couple of days and is pretty painful but he’ll play. Josh Addo-Carr had a similar injury. I spoke to Josh today, he’s the same and he’s in pretty good spirits.”

Another question mark for the Blues is who will fill the last bench spot with Tariq Sims, Tevita Pangai-Junior, Liam Martin and Ryan Matterson all names that have been floated.

QUEENSLAND MAROONS

Elsewhere, in a boost for Queensland the Melbourne Storm have confirmed Cameron Munster has been cleared to head into Origin camp despite battling a foot injury.

It comes after Munster told the Courier Mail that he is “unlikely” to be fit to play.

“I haven’t run at all this week, so at this stage I would have to say I’m unlikely for Origin I,” he said.

“To be honest, I’m touch and go, I don’t know if I will play for sure.

“All us Queensland boys are going down by the sounds of it, we might have to postpone Origin until the end of the season.

“I have tried my best in the past to play in pain with injuries.

“I haven’t done any running this week, I’m doing my best to heal this injury, but it’s taking longer than expected.”

The other big injury concern for the Maroons surrounds Kalyn Ponga after he was ruled out of Newcastle’s game against Manly this week with a groin injury.

The Queensland team is not as straight forward with the centre position and bench forward roles shaping as big headaches.

Kurt Capewell could play there again but is also a strong option on the bench otherwise.
