Two people who were setting up a new cafe on the Gold Coast have suffered serious burns when the gas system exploded.

A 26-year-old man and 23-year-old woman are being taken to Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in serious but stable conditions with significant facial, limb and abdominal burns.

Two ambulances, critical care paramedics and a high acuity response paramedic were tasked to the scene on Energy Circuit in Robina.

Queensland Ambulance officer Andre Gollop said the pair were testing the gas system in the kitchen of the new coffee shop when there was a "flash explosion".

There was no fire following the explosion but Queensland Fire and Rescue did attend.
