Kelsey-Lee Barber has spoken after winning bronze in the women’s javelin:

“I freaking love this sport,” she told Seven. I love my event. I can’t tell you how much fun I was having out there tonight. Like, it’s this weird focussed determination that I just thrive off and I love it. I love being out here.

“I think I’ve said a few times that this year has challenged me in so many ways. I’m not going to lie to you, there were moments this year where Mike and I were sitting and I was crying, I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it here … I think the thing was I just - as I said, I love it. I didn’t want to give it up and I didn’t want to stop fighting for it. So I pursued and I worked hard for it and we found a way.

“I think tonight it was about the win. I wanted the gold medal. I wanted to walk away an Olympic champion. So it didn’t matter where I was in the order, I was still fighting for that win the entire way, and I think I just backed myself from the start. Like, I knew if I had a big throw at the start it was going to challenge the girls, but it was like every throw was my last throw because I know I can do something special with that.”
