Dan Christian’s explosive hitting provides Australia with an overdue counterpunch which could take him all the way to the Twenty20 World Cup in October.

The veteran journeyman propelled Australia to it’s first win of the already lost Bangladesh series - via five sixes in one over - on Sunday morning came as discussions continued about moving the absent Steve Smith down the order for the T20 World Cup to be the finisher Australia desperately needs.

Australia finally got a win but still struggled to victory in difficult batting conditions, with tailender AJ Tye scrambling a single from the last ball of the 19th over to take Australia past Bangladesh’s modest 9/104 and avoid a fourth successive loss in the five-match series.

Christian was sent in after the first wicket, when acting captain Matthew Wade was bowled with an arm ball, and went after left arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan in Australia’s fourth over, top-scoring with 39 in 15 balls.

Despite Australia losing seven of it’s nine T20 matches with a depleted side in the West Indies and Bangladesh on this tour and slipping to five successive T20 series defeats, former great Adam Gilchrist is unconcerned by the poor scoreline and mediocre batting.

The Fox Cricket frontman believes that of the players currently in Bangladesh, as many as 10 won’t make the T20 World Cup squad of 15.

“(Captain Aaron) Finch, (David) Warner, (Glenn) Maxwell, (Steve) Smith, with maybe Marnus Labuschagne and Marcus Stoinis are to come back in the batting,” Gilchrist said. “I don’t think the recent results mean a huge amount.”

He feels that with Mitchell Marsh’s standout batting at number three on this tour, there is an opportunity for Smith to move down the order where Australia has struggled to close out innings.

“With the conditions that are likely to be encountered for the T20 World Cup in the UAE you’re probably better off having someone who can manipulate the ball rather try and hit sixes all the time,” Gilchrist said.
