NSW Nationals deputy leader and Bathurst MP Paul Toole has confirmed he will make a bid for the top job when the party meets tomorrow for a ballot after Deputy Premier John Barilaro quit politics.

Water Minister and Oxley MP Melinda Pavey yesterday said she would challenge for the leadership.

“John has inspired me to continue his work and I have decided to nominate as the leader of the NSW Nationals,” Ms Pavey said in a statement.

“A strong National party is integral to a strong coalition, and I am encouraged by the support my colleagues have shown me.”

Dominic Perrottet was asked about Mr Toole’s decision at his press conference a little earlier today, and the imminent election of a new deputy premier.

“He’s a good bloke, Paul, and he’s served his electorate well,” the new NSW Liberal Party leader said.

“I think he came into Parliament in 2011 with me ... he’s a strong campaigner.

“He’s the deputy leader, so I’ve worked very closely with him over this period of time. I’ll work with whoever the National Party elect tomorrow.

“They’ve got, I think, a couple of candidates running, Mel Pavey as well. They’re all very good people, and they’ll make a great contribution to rural and regional NSW.”
