Up for best direction are Robert Connolly (The Dry), Roderick MacKay (The Furnace), Stephen Maxwell Johnson (High Ground), Justin Kurzel (Nitram) and Glendyn Ivin (Penguin Bloom).

The awards, which will be held at Sydney Opera House and screen on the Ten Network on December 8, will feature both well-known names and newcomers from film and television.

The cast of The Newsreader is well-represented with nominations for Anna Torv, Sam Reid, William McInnes, Stephen Peacocke, Michelle Lim Davidson and Marg Downey.

While Wakefield has acting nominations for Rudi Dharmalingam, Mandy McElhinney, Harry Greenwood and Harriet Dyer, Geraldine Hakewill has surprisingly missed out.

Scott Ryan, who has written and starred in three seasons of Mr Inbetween, is up for both screenplay and acting awards.

In film, Simon Baker, who plays an outback cop in High Ground, is up for best actor alongside Eric Bana (The Dry), Caleb Landry Jones (Nitram), Ahmed Malek (The Furnace) and Jacob Junior Nayinggul (High Ground).

Best actress is between Rose Byrne (Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway), Judy Davis (Nitram), Noni Hazlehurst (June Again), Genevieve O’Reilly (The Dry) and Naomi Watts (Penguin Bloom).

There is further recognition for the High Ground cast with Sean Mununggurr and Jack Thompson both up for best supporting actor with Michael Caton (Rams), Baykali Ganambarr (The Furnace) and Anthony LaPaglia (Nitram); and Esmerelda Marimowa contending for best supporting actress against Essie Davis (Nitram), Claudia Karvan (June Again), Miranda Tapsell (The Dry) and Jacki Weaver (Penguin Bloom).

The low-profile contenders for Best Indie Film are Disclosure, Ellie and Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt), Lone Wolf, Moon Rock For Monday, My First Summer and Under My Skin.

Nominees in the technical awards are still to be announced.
