Swans coach John Longmire spoke to the media post game.

How does that sit among what you’ve achieved and seen in football?

Never seen that. Never been a part of anything like that. That was one of the most special moments you’d probably get, certainly I can look back on. I just said to the players after the game we were all privileged to, in my instance coach, Lance but also the players he has played with over the years, both at Sydney and Hawthorn, Alastair as well. We’ve just been able to watch one of the all-time greats go about his business. To sit there and watch that tonight was pretty special.

You took the players into a private room post game. What was the feeling like in there and what was said to Lance? Did he address the room? What was said down there?

We just got the players and then the staff and Lance’s family in. Just had a couple of words. Just spent some time together. You rarely get that opportunity these days to really celebrate those special moments. We’re on a six-day break this week. We’ve got to get back to business and all of that. I just thought it was important to get everyone together and just say we witnessed something pretty special.

In your wildest dreams when your club recruited him, could you picture scenes like tonight?

I don’t know. It seemed like a fair while ago now. He has played for Hawthorn and us and been a star at both clubs. Star of the game. He’s just so humble and that’s the thing about him. He’s got his kids there. He is rapt. He’s got his family. He’s a very humble superstar. They’re always the best types.

How special was it for the club, for him to do it here, in front of home fans at the SCG rather than somewhere else?

Look, 1,000 goals wherever it was kicked was going to be pretty special. That wasn’t - that didn’t concern me. As it’s turned out, to have it here in the last quarter, that last quarter went forever, to have our home supporters be witness to that and to be a part of that was just pretty special. Plenty of people talk about Plugger. They were here, where they sat. I’m sure the same thing will be talked about in the future about Lance.

Is there a chance he doesn’t play next Thursday night?

We haven’t talked about it.

Can you describe what you were feeling in the third quarter and into the fourth? What was that like for you trying to manage the game?

You’re in the game moment. That’s my role. That’s our role, is to be in the game. We’re trying to manage the game. I understand that everyone watching it is in a different space. Fully appreciate that. But when you’re in game mode, you’re just making sure we’re playing the right way, finishing the game off. We wanted to win first and foremost. We understood Geelong were going to go hard, take some risks. That’s what they did. That’s front of mind. It did creep into my mind in the last little bit when a couple of boys had the ball inside 50m, I might have said once or twice, “Kick it to Lance”. I probably shouldn’t have said it. A special moment. Unbelievable.
