Prime Minister Scott Morrison has urged people to be safe on the roads this long weekend, after four police officers on his security detail were injured in a car crash yesterday.

Speaking after a Good Friday church service, Morrison said the officers were doing well.

“One of them is still in hospital. The other is expected to be discharged today. The other two Tasmanian police officers I understand that are doing well,” he said.

“We heard the accident right behind us, right behind us and we obviously feared for the worst. But thankfully, thankfully, everybody is OK but obviously, in good care.”

Morrison has not been able to speak to the officers or their families yet, but said he had sent them messages.

“They were able to speak to their families yesterday, which I was pleased about, and so we’re looking forward to their recovery,” he said.

The prime minister suspended campaigning after the crash, and said on Friday that today was not a day for politics.

“Easter is about faith. It’s about hope. It’s about being able to look forward to the future with confidence, encouraged by your beliefs. It’s a very personal thing for me, and I really enjoyed the service this morning,” he said.

Morrison attended the service in the crucial Melbourne swing seat of Chisholm this morning. The seat is held by Liberal Gladys Liu with a margin of just 0.5 per cent.
