Lumumba can be heard responding: “I didn’t throw him under ... and we can’t go through that again. I have gone through this whole year, and this is part of my issue because you still believe that and that’s what hurts me so much, Bucks.”

The conversations allegedly took place before Lumumba requested a trade with one year remaining on his contract. He subsequently joined Melbourne for two years before retiring.

In the recordings, Lumumba claimed he had been given permission to speak publicly about McGuire’s comments before being criticised for doing so.

Buckley replied: “You’ve become a bit of a rogue. And you might call it ‘leadership’ but you have basically gone on your own, not tangents, but on your own crusades at times.”

In another recording Lumumba said that “whether it has been intentionally or unintentionally I have been unfairly treated in this workplace”.

The former Magpie player said his opinion had been suppressed.

Buckley is heard in the recordings to have said: “You know what I have worked out is that no matter how much time and energy that people spend with you, they might not get, they may not live up to your standards, they might not get to what you want them to be or what you want it to be and sometimes it’s better just to say ‘Okay, well we’re not going to get there, let’s go and spend some time with people that are going to actually make some progress and that want to be involved in this place.’ ”

On Tuesday, Buckley responded on social media to Lumumba’s posts challenging the former Magpie to release the recordings he made in full: “Heritier, I offer you the opportunity to put a full and uncut version of our conversations on public record so as to provide context to our conversations and the support that was provided to you above and beyond that which could be reasonably expected in the circumstances.”

The Age has contacted Buckley for comment.
