The cold front that brought a “polar blast” of icy temperatures and 90-kilometre winds in NSW this week is expected to pass by Thursday, with warmer temperatures into the weekend, although meteorologists expect another Antarctic front to sweep in by Sunday.

Damaging winds tore through south-east Australia on Wednesday, triggering severe weather warnings throughout NSW and Victoria, but they had eased by 5pm.

More than 1400 calls were made to the SES across NSW this week after fierce gusts damaged powerlines and left 4000 homes without power on Wednesday.

While winds will be milder inland on Thursday, the bureau has warned of strong marine winds and dangerous surf conditions from Coffs Harbour to Ulladulla, with 3 to 4 metre high waves expected along the NSW coast.

Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino said the cold front responsible for the wild wind that lashed the state this week will be replaced by a warmer front that should bring some calmer weather before it is quickly followed by another intense cold front.

“The next is due to arrive in South Australia on Friday and move upwards past Victoria, the ACT and into NSW by Sunday, bringing another bout of damaging winds and cold air,” Domensino said.

Although it may seem colder than usual, Domensino said the temperature was not lower than an average winter, it had just dropped earlier because of the quick succession of cold fronts.

“Two strong cold fronts with just a week apart at the beginning of winter is pretty uncommon.”
