It wasn’t quite Mike Tyson’s bite of the century, but Edgar Berlanga tried to take a chunk out of opponent Alexis Angulo’s ear during a bout in New York on Sunday.
During the seventh round of the WBO NABO super middleweight bout at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, the two boxers were locked when Berlanga turned his face into Angulo, at what looked like was in search for an ear, but instead got Angulo’s neck and opened his mouth to bite him.
The move left the crowd stunned, with ESPN commentator Timothy Bradley saying “are you kidding me right now? Oh my goodness.”
“I can’t stop him with my punches, so I guess I’m going to bite him,” Bradley mused of the move.
Berlanga later went on to win the fight by unanimous decision, but it wasn’t without its discomfort, as the video of the bite was replayed on the screens around the stadium.

Speaking to ESPN after the fight, Berlanga defended the move, saying that he was trying to protect himself.
“He kept throwing elbows, and headbutted me and stuff, and I was telling him, ‘yo chill’,” Berlanga said to reporters.
“I don’t know. I just got aggressive and then Mike Tyson style.”
