“Those shorter turnarounds as you go a bit deeper into the season are probably the biggest challenge, but we’ll field a strong side in Brisbane and look forward to another contest against the Lions, who will be obviously looking to bounce back after the game yesterday,” Beveridge said.

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell was critical of his team after they were on the wrong end of a 68-point swing, having been on track for an upset in the second term when they led by 26 points. There was also a turnaround of 33 in the contested ball count.

Mitchell gathered his men immediately at the three-quarter time break to deliver a stern message.

“I’m not going to help you with structure because if we can’t win contests, we can’t win games,” Mitchell said.

“We just didn’t have enough players that were tough enough for long enough today.

“We’ve proven that we can match it with a really strong side like that for periods of the game, but we just can’t do it for long enough at the moment and that’s not acceptable in our standards and what we want to achieve as a group.”
