Welcome to your five-minute recap of the trading day and how the experts saw it.

The numbers: The Australian sharemarket has snapped a three-day losing streak to begin the week with a 1.1 per cent rise ahead of the Reserve Bank’s looming interest rate decision on Tuesday.

The ASX 200 climbed by 72.7 points to reach 6,612.6 points at close on Monday, with energy stocks leading the index, increasing 2.8 per cent. Santos climbed by 3.2 per cent and Woodside moved 2.7 per cent higher after oil prices rose on Friday.

All sectors rose as the market settled after a sharp morning jump, with miners lagging the index after iron ore prices continued to fall over the weekend. BHP declined by 0.2 per cent.

The big four banks all rose marginally, while health care, consumer discretionary and real estate stocks were up by more than 1.7 per cent.

The lifters: Imugene 12.8%, New Hope Corporation 8.4%, Ingenia Communities Group 5.3%

The laggards: Magellan Financial Group -9.3%, Pointsbet Holdings -5.6%, Perpetual -3.1%

The lowdown: The ASX followed a Wall Street rally last Friday to begin the session by jumping as much as 1.7 per cent behind particularly strong tech stocks, which faded as the session continued.

Markets were awaiting the Reserve Bank’s interest rate decision on Tuesday, with economists expecting a 50 basis point rate rise.
