While Gillard is leaning into the legacy of her speech as the anniversary inches closer, she has previously spoken about the difficulty it caused her.

“There was a time where I was a little resentful that all those years in politics, and all of that work, and everything we did … that all of it apparently came down to one moment in time, one speech,” Gillard told the ABC in 2019.
“But I’m reconciled with it now and I understand that when people are writing things about me – including writing my obituary, hopefully in many years to come – that it’s going to feature in there.”
Since leaving office in 2013, Gillard has become a high-profile patron, chair and advocate and is the founder and inaugural chair of the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership at King’s College London and its sister institute at the Australian National University.
While she spends much of her time in London, Gillard did return home earlier this year to campaign on behalf of Anthony Albanese and Labor in the lead-up to the federal election.
“He is ready to be prime minister; he will be a great prime minister,” Gillard said before Albanese’s victory.
