These days (I hear you argue), women change their names as a sign of their commitment to their partner, and to have the same name as the future children of the relationship. But Jen and Ben are in their 50s, and presumably aren’t going to have kids together. (And J.Lo doesn’t have the same surname as her kids anyway; her twins have their dad Marc Anthony’s original surname.)

And if the Lo-Flecks want to demonstrate their commitment, there are plenty of ways to do it. They could get matching tattoos. Update their Facebook relationship status. Post loved-up Instagram pics. Get married! Oh, hang on, they did that already.
But why the name change? Well, I suspect J.Lo is conscious of her power and status, and has taken Affleck’s surname to help redress the imbalance. She may be the bigger star in the relationship, she seems to be saying, but he will always be the man.
But changing her name isn’t just unnecessary, it is regressive, and worse, acoustically displeasing. Jenny from the Block will always be J.Lo to me.
