Welcome to your five-minute recap of the trading day and how the experts saw it.

The numbers: A tug-of-war between rising tech stocks and the falling energy sector ended with the former helping the Australian sharemarket to a slight win on Thursday, as several resource majors released production results.

The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 finished the day 0.5 per cent higher at 6,794.3 points, with the technology sector up 3.2 per cent and energy stocks down 2.8 per cent.

Woodside lost 4.4 per cent after releasing its June quarter production results, with its eye-popping 60 per cent increase in quarterly production explained by its completed merger with BHP’s petroleum arm. Santos finished 1.9 per cent lower after its production slightly dropped due to planned maintenance and quarterly sales remained flat despite higher prices.

Meanwhile, the tech sector jumped behind Link Administration Holdings, which closed 12.6 per cent higher after accepting a revised $2.5 billion takeover bid from Canadian suitor Dye & Durham. An earlier higher bid from the Canadian firm was derailed after Australia’s competition watchdog raised concerns, before Link’s board then rejected a lower offer.

The lifters: Zip Co 16.5%, Kelsian Group 14.7%, Link Administration Holdings 12.6%

The laggards: Imugene -5.7%, Woodside Energy -4.4%, Sims -4.4%

The lowdown: Despite a slight Wall Street rise overnight following positive company earnings, the local bourse had been tipped to fall in the opening minutes of trade. However, this week’s tech rally continued as the index broadly followed see-sawing US futures.

While the mining sector was relatively unmoved, lithium miners enjoyed a strong session after Elon Musk’s Tesla reported better earnings than anticipated overnight, despite COVID-19 disruptions hitting its Chinese manufacturing facilities and supply chain issues lingering.
