Queensland has rebuffed a NSW government bid to bring the Logies award night to Sydney.
Destination NSW has made an offer for Australian television’s night of nights, potentially with a new broadcasting partner, Seven West Media.
Queensland tourism officials, however, remain confident that they will be able to exercise a one-year extension option under existing contractual arrangements, stymying any Sydney outing until 2024.
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said: “Take a straw poll of the nominees, sponsors, guests and media networks and I think you’ll find they love the Logies right here on the Goldie.
“The future is really in the hands of the State Government but if it’s my call, I’m already planning on what to wear for 2023 so see you on the Gold Coast.”
Under grilling from Labor’s John Graham in parliament on Monday, Destination NSW’s chief executive Steve Cox did not deny it intended to poach the Logies from the Gold Coast.

Queensland secured a four-year deal to host the Logies in 2018, but COVID-19 caused the awards’ cancellation for two of those years. Queensland is believed to have first and last rights to extend its contract. Since going to Queensland the event has grown from a one-night to a week-long event.
A Queensland government spokesperson said: “The Logies found a new home on the Gold Coast and a new lease on life. It’s not surprising other states now want them back.
“Queensland has a strong and vibrant screen industry. Celebrating all facets of ‘screen’ had become part of a growing schedule of activities that includes the Logies. It would be a shame if that did not continue.”
