Journalists at The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age were well represented at the Australian industry’s biggest awards night on Thursday, underlining the quality of journalism coming out of the newsrooms.
Nick McKenzie, Joel Tozer and Amelia Ballinger’s investigation into The Star casino, which uncovered money laundering and criminal links, was honoured at the 2022 Walkley Awards among five wins for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.
“Star and the gambling industry’s reckoning”, which aired on Nine’s 60 Minutes, won the Business Journalism award at Thursday night’s ceremony.

The Herald and The Age’s coverage of the crisis in Ukraine, which included multiple trips to the war-torn country by journalists, was recognised with two awards.
Decorated photojournalist Kate Geraghty won the Feature/Photographic Essay award for “Invasion of Ukraine – Civilian Impact”, bringing the harsh realities of the war to our attention.

Back in Australia, Mark Stehle and The Journey through Ukraine Team won the Production award for the interactive visual story “6000km journey”, which captured reporter Anthony Galloway and Geraghty’s travels.
Journalists Aisha Dow, Nick McKenzie and Joel Tozer received the Print/Text News Report award for “Triple-zero crisis”, which detailed desperate calls to Victoria’s triple-zero service that were never answered or were picked up too late to save lives.
“Nick McKenzie, Aisha Dow, Adele Ferguson and our production team are among the finest in the country,″ The Age’s acting editor Michael Bachelard said. “These award-winners and all our nominees demonstrate the talented team at The Age is at the forefront of Australian journalism.”
