David Warner’s frustration with his recovery from a broken elbow continues as the star opener faces the prospect of not playing a match in Australia’s three-game one-day series against India.

The dashing veteran must be given a positive assessment by the team’s medical staff on Wednesday ahead of the third and final ODI in Chennai, after completing a training session on Tuesday evening, Sydney time.

“We’ll have a better idea after training,” a team official said. “If positive, we’ll see how he pulls up tomorrow [Wednesday].”

Tuesday was just Warner’s second training session since returning to India for the one-day series after he suffered a hairline fracture of his left elbow during the second Test in Delhi. He was sent home to recuperate.

Warner’s first practice session after joining the one-day squad in Mumbai ahead of the first game was aborted when a ball cannoned into his thigh off an inside edge, forcing him out of the nets.

While the resultant bruising was considered merely an irritation, his lack of practice since suffering the elbow injury has left Warner little opportunity to prove his readiness for a return to international cricket.

Tuesday’s training session proved the only one available during the six-day series, which has been taken up by three matches and two travel days.

In Warner’s absence, Mitch Marsh has had a spectacular time opening the batting.  Promoted to join Travis Head at the top of the order for the first ODI last Friday, Marsh top-scored with a spectacular 81 off 65 balls, including five sixes.
