Cricket fans will be able to watch Australia battle against India in the International Cricket Council’s World Test Championship on free-to-air television under an exclusive deal struck with local broadcaster Seven West Media.

The World Test Championship (WTC) final will take place in London on June 7-11, weeks before Australia play England in the 2023 Ashes series.

The deal marks the first time Seven has broadcast a Test match played outside Australia in more than 20 years and signals at its renewed commitment to supporting Australian cricket.

Lewis Martin, managing director of Seven Melbourne and head of network sport, said the Test would be one of the great moments in international sport this year.

“The ICC World Test Championship is the premier competition in Test cricket. The prospect of playing in the final has been a big motivator for the Australian team in recent years, while India is focused squarely on taking the mace after its 2021 loss,” Martin said.

“The fierce rivalry between Australia and India, played out at an iconic venue, will make this a competition that no Australian sports fan will want to miss.”

This is the second broadcast deal Seven has signed with a cricket body in the past three months. In January, Seven signed a seven-year $455 million deal with Cricket Australia, which allows it to broadcast local men and women’s Test matches, T20s, and key Big Bash League and Women’s Big Bash League matches.

The WTC deal will give Seven exclusive broadcast access to the Test final, which will be broadcast in prime time on the Seven Network and its digital video service, 7Plus. The time difference and anticipation of the Ashes series will give Seven the chance to attract large audiences and generate advertising dollars. The Ashes will be broadcast exclusively on Nine Entertainment Co’s television network (Nine owns this masthead).
