“It wasn’t the perfect conditions for him to be able to at least get through the round. It’s disappointing, but that’s just kind of, I think, where we’re at with how his body is right now. It’s just the weather got him.
“I was talking to him at the end of last year, and then he was saying the reason why he pulled out of the PGA was a screw went through the skin on Saturday or whatever it was. I don’t know how bad it is this time, but hopefully [he’s OK].
“It was good to see him play well and make the cut in those conditions, especially to tie the all-time record of consecutive cuts. That’s unbelievable.”
Before the tournament began, Woods said his leg was in more pain than last year at The Masters, when he remarkably made the cut and walked all 72 holes in his first major appearance since the crash.
Rory McIlroy went as far as to say Woods would still be a major contender if he didn’t have to walk the course, which has been at its most punishing this week.
Just before officials called players from the course mid-way through the third round, Woods hobbled back to his caddie Joe LaCava to seek shelter under an umbrella, a man who couldn’t possibly have walked almost two rounds on the final day.
Woods is the fourth player to withdraw from The Masters following Will Zalatoris, Kevin Na and Louis Oosthuizen.
