Sydney is set for another foggy morning after Saturday’s thick cloud, which blanketed the city, shut down ferry services, and caused flights at Sydney Airport to be delayed or diverted.

Weatherzone meteorologist Aline Ribeiro said a high-pressure system, mixed with low temperatures and light winds was behind Saturday’s fog, which lifted by mid-morning.

Ribeiro said the fog cloud could cover the western suburbs and the city on Sunday morning. Fog is very common at this time of year with cooler temperatures and light winds, Ribeiro said.

While it might be a bit odd to see the city skyline covered by a grey cloud, spare a thought for an area of the Atlantic Ocean called Grand Banks. It’s the foggiest place in the world with more than 200 days of grey cloud each year.

Sydney – the country’s second-wettest capital city – has also had two weeks without rain for the first time in two years.

Weatherzone noted that although there were some rain droplets on Thursday in some Sydney suburbs, it wasn’t enough to register at the Observatory Hill weather station, where official records for Sydney are kept. This means that Sydney has been rain-free since May 20 but the dry run looks set to break this week with showers predicted.

The city’s previous no-rain streak was 13 days in from June 6, 2022, to June 19, 2022. The city’s longest rainless streak was 48 days from July 17, 1995 to September 3, 1995.
