Global staff cuts

Meij confirmed that the pizza company will be making 20 per cent of global support office staff redundant as part of a restructure to save costs that saw it shut underperforming stores (56 globally, 20 in Australia) and see some global leaders take on more than one role. Meij himself will now be CEO of Australia and New Zealand as well as head of the group overall, effective immediately.

The pizza company introduced, then retracted, a 6 per cent delivery service fee last year after the extra charge resulted in people buying fewer pizzas.

Meij declined to say how many Australian workers will be made redundant, but said it was “roughly 200” across 12 markets that would leave the business in coming months.

“We haven’t broken it out because we’re still in that transition,” Meij said.

Domino’s, which operates in Europe and Asia as well as Australia, saw global food sales tick up 2.2 per cent to $4 billion and group revenue rise 3.4 per cent to $2.4 billion, but this was a result of price increases as overall meal orders declined.

Closer to home, Australia’s earnings slid 3.9 per cent in the 2023 financial year, which Meij said was “quite robust” compared to the 20.6 per cent fall in Europe.

The chief executive will steer the company’s focus on “rebalancing the value equation” to drive up order volumes, make customers order meals more often, attract new customers and retain existing ones.

One of Domino’s’ most successful recent product launches has been its My Domino’s Box, a personalised meal consisting of a mini pizza and two sides, which has helped to increase lunchtime sales.

Meij indicated the pizza business will release a new “snacking” product before Christmas and hinted in a call with analysts and investors on Wednesday that it would be similar to loaded fries.
