Sydney Theatre Company’s production The Visitors, which made news last year when its cast made a statement supporting Palestine at curtain call, has won two major accolades at this year’s Sydney Theatre Awards.
The awards for best main stage production and best ensemble cast were presented at Monday night’s ceremony at the Seymour Centre’s York Theatre, attended by around 500 members of the Sydney theatre community.
The Visitors at Sydney Theatre Company won best mainstage production and best ensemble cast at this year’s Sydney Theatre awards.
The play, written by Jane Harrison and directed by Wesley Enoch, was one of 15 productions that took home awards.
A Streetcar Named Desire, produced by Red Line Productions, clinched the award for best independent production.
It also won best direction of an independent production, awarded to Alexander Berlage, best performance in a leading role in an independent production, secured by Sheridan Harbridge, and best performance in a supporting role in an independent production, given to Catherine Văn-Davies.
Shari Sebbens won best direction of a main stage production for Sydney Theatre Company’s Fences, while best performance in a leading role in a main stage production went to Catherine Văn-Davies for Constellations.

Best musical was awarded to Hayes Theatre’s A Little Night Music, whose director Dean Bryant was given best direction of a musical.
The Judith Johnson Award for best performance in a leading role in a musical went to Ruva Ngwenya for Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.
