The official gala portrait of Australia’s Queen Mary of Denmark and her King Frederik X has been released by their royal house, Kongehuset.

The couple acceded the throne on January 14, when Frederik’s mother, Queen Margrethe abdicated.

In the picture, the couple wear the Order of the Elephant, one of two royal orders of chivalry, along with other objects.

It was taken by photographer Steen Evald in the Green Room in the royal reception rooms at Christiansborg Palace.

Tasmanian-born Mary “wears the crown jewels for the first time in the portrait”, according to the official statement.

These are an emerald set with tiara, necklace, earrings and a large brooch that can be divided in three parts.

The jewels are one of four sets, or garnitures, at the disposal of the Queen of Denmark and are ordinarily kept on display at Rosenborg Castle.

“It was a gift from Christian VIII to Queen Caroline Amalie, probably for their silver wedding anniversary on 22 May 1840,” the statement reads.

She also wears a brilliant miniature diamond portrait of Frederik in a bow of the Order of Danneborog ribbon.

Frederik, who holds the rank of admiral, wears the Danish Navy’s full-dress uniform in the photo.

“The portrait can henceforth be seen hung in, among other places, state institutions, including at Danish embassies and consulates around the world and on Danish vessels,” the palace said.
