Morning all, hope you had a good weekend. I’m Emma Young, sub-editor here at WAtoday.

I signed off on Friday night as a tornado was ripping through Bunbury; this morning we see the aftermath, in which more than 100 homes are damaged – seven now deemed uninhabitable – and a huge area is strewn with asbestos. Power had been restored by last night but the cleanup’s only just begun.

As the tornado was hitting down south, a 16-year-old youth at Carousel shopping centre was allegedly punching a 20-year-old man in the face. He had been allegedly armed with a knife, which the victim managed to grab and throw away, and then allegedly stole another. He was charged with stealing and being armed in a way that may cause fear. He appeared in court yesterday, was bailed and will appear again today. Police have asked witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers.

Arson investigators are at a vacant house on Milford street in East Victoria Park gutted by fire overnight, so again, if you know anything or saw anything around midnight to 1am, contact Crime Stoppers.

The state and federal governments are at loggerheads over the planned phase out of live sheep exports by 2028; Federal Agriculture Minister Murray Watt flew to Perth on Saturday to confirm the ban and both the state’s premier and opposition leader have made scathing comments about transition arrangements thus far, saying farmers already doing it tough will suffer further.

This morning, the government will provide an update on its voluntary gun buyback scheme: it has so far bought back 10,000 guns for more than $3.8 million.

Heather McNeill will be covering the trial, beginning today, of Perth woman Bozena Knapinski, 62. She is accused of poisoning her husband of 39 years by spiking his water bottles with saline medication over two years.

And in happier news we have a gorgeous story from Mark Naglazas about the firm, fast and funny friendships flourishing across Perth which I guarantee will have you smiling; and the CEO of Crown Perth, who I’ll hazard knows a fair bit about dining, has shared his favourite casual Asian eateries across Northbridge and Vic Park.

Stay with me throughout the day and I’ll bring you the news as it happens.
