Matt Wearn has become the first ever back-to-back Olympic champion in the men’s dinghy, clinching Australia’s 15th gold medal of the Paris Games.
The 28-year-old extended the amazing run of Australian gold medal success in the race, beginning with Tom Slingsby in London followed by Tom Burton (Rio 2016) and Wearn (Tokyo 2020).

Wearn took a 14-point lead over Cypriot Pavlos Kontides into the medal race, the same lead Slingsby held over Kontides going into the final day of London 2012 before winning gold.
Ultra-light winds across the Bay of Marseille had caused days of delays for all classes at the Olympic regatta, and the first attempt at the final was abandoned more than 20 minutes in when the wind dropped off. Wearn had been just one lap away from getting his hands on a second gold medal.
However, the pressure didn’t get to Wearn and when the race began he seized his moment.
