Jerusalem: Centre of the World tells the epic story of the world's most incredible city, capturing the rich mosaic of the city's Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities. Covering a sweeping history of over 4,000 years, the film - shot in Hi-Definition - explores the founding of the city; the birth and convergence of the world's three major monotheistic religions; and the key events in Jerusalem's history as described in the Hebrew and Christian Bibles, the Talmud, the Hagaddah, the Koran and the Hadith.
Venturing deep into Jerusalem, highlights include: Mount Moriah, the site of the First and Second Temples; the Church of the Holy Sepulcher; the Dome of the Rock and the Western Wall. Includes interviews with locals, top scholars and clergy. Running time is approximately two hours. Hosted by Ray Suarez. Executive Producer/Director is Andrew Goldberg
6pm: Herod: Behind the Myth
A man charged by the Bible with ordering the slaughter of the infant Jesus; who executed thousands to wrest control of the holy city of Jerusalem; a man who even killed his own wife and had her preserved in honey. King Herod The Great is one of history's most famous tyrants, yet he is also celebrated as a visionary whose engineering feats include manmade mountains with cities buried within, the world's largest artificial harbour, and one of the largest wonders of the ancient world - the Temple of Jerusalem. A commoner driven by soaring ambition who rose to become king of the Jews, Herod manipulated the warring factions of the Roman Empire to become an ally of both Mark Antony and Octavian. Even after plunging into madness he still held power over the divided Holy Land. This dramatised documentary is the untold story of one of the greatest figures in ancient history, taking us beyond the myths and legends of his reign.
At a time when a young boy, Jesus Christ, stood ready to change mankind's history, in a land that is the most sacred and yet most fought over on Earth, a legend of untold brutality was born. Famed for his savage "massacre of the innocents", King Herod became demonised as the perennial outsider - a man who ruled the Jews for 40 years, yet was never strictly a Jew himself. Now, two thousand years later, this film pieces together research in archaeology, medical science and religious history to unmask the man behind the legend. Bringing together internationally renowned experts on Jewish history such as Al Baumgarten, archaeologists such as Jodi Magoess and psychiatric experts such as Dr Trevor• Turner of University Hospital, London, the film creates a psychological and historical profile of Herod and poses the ultimate question - evil dictator, madman, or visionary genius?
Filmed on location in Jerusalem and at key sites across Israel and Palestine, and shot on High Definition cameras, the documentary uses stylish dramatisations to depict the key events of Herod's life. The drarnatisations' authenticity is derived from the latest historical and archaeological research into Herod's life and• the inclusion of dialogue in ancient Greek- the language spoken by royalty in ancient Judea in Herod's time.
The drarnatisations recall Herod's powerful alliance with Rome that allowed him to take the Judean throne. Brokering a deal with Mark Antony, one of tbe greatest generals of the ancient world, Herod became King of the Jews at the age of 36. Yet Herod King of the Jews was not strictly a Jew at all. He was descended from the ldumeans, who lived on the southern edge of the kingdom of Judea. A few generations before Herod's birth, this pagan tribe had converted to Judaism, but Herod's roots haunted him, and he craved membership of the exclusive club of the Hasmoneans, the Judean royal dynasty who claimed their bloodline back to King David.
