On 16 June 2011 nearly 1000 business leaders from around Australia slept rough for just one night to experience first-hand what more than 100 000 Australians experience every night. The Secretary of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, Andrew Metcalfe, was one of around 150 Canberra-based CEOs participating in the nationwide event.
As Andrew and his fellow CEOs finally got to sleep in the 2-degree chilly Canberra air, a very loud train rolled past...and then a very low flying plane...and then an ambulance. The noises were all part of the effort to make the night more realistic by booming noises common to homeless life through loud speakers in the area.
Andrew has raised more than $20 000 for the event and learnt a great deal about the plight of homelessness in Australia. He now has a very different perspective on the issue. The sponsorship drive ends at the end of June so it's not too late to sponsor Andrew, or other CEOs, by going to: www.ceosleepout.org.au
