The Outlander PHEV allows the flexibility of charging it's ion battery pack by either plug-in into the electricity produced by the grid or can be charged by the vehicles on board generator, which is powered by the MIVEC engine. By using electricity from the grid, there is no reliance on fossil fuels and the vehicles co2 emissions can be reduced to zero.
The Outlander PHEV incorporates 2 electric motors that draw power from the drive battery. An electric motor is located on the front and rear axle to enable 4WD ability, each delivering up to 60 kilowatts of power.
The drive battery is located under the floor to maximise interior space. This in turn improves safety by lowering the vehicles' centre of gravity to reduce roll movement and improve handling without compromising SUV functionality.
The Outlander PHEV also features a 2 litre MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system) engine, delivering a maximum output of 89 kilo watts and 190 newton meters of torque. The MIVEC engine has two main functions. Firstly to power a generator to generate electricity that charges the drive battery and secondly to directly drive the front wheels.
