The 89th Academy Awards suffered a serious blunder on Monday, with presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty reading out the incorrect winner for Best Picture. 

Dunaway declared La La Land the winner, when in fact Moonlight snapped up Best Picture. Beatty had to awkwardly return to the stage to correct the mistake during the middle of La La Land's acceptance speech. 

"I opened the envelope," he said. "And it said Emma Stone, La La Land. That's why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasn't trying to be funny."

The Academy Awards had to quickly retract a tweet, before publishing the correct winner. 

Awards host Jimmy Kimmel was then tasked with signing off after the awkward blunder, joking that he knew he would "screw this show up".

"I blame myself for this," he said. "Remember, it's just an awards show. I mean, we hate to see see people disappointed. But the good news is we got to see some extra speeches."
