Ahead of the annual E3 games expo in Los Angeles, Electronic Arts has struck out against its recent reputation as a house of annualised franchises and predatory lootboxes by showing off both a blockbuster new singleplayer game and a range of artsier, smaller-scale indie experiences.

These days you won't find a booth for EA — one of the industry's biggest and oldest publishers — at E3. Instead the company hosts its own fan-facing EA Play event just down the road in Hollywood, the weekend before the show begins.

Fans lined for hours just to get a non-interactive peek at Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, a brand new adventure game coming this year from developer Respawn (previously known for Titanfall). Not only does the game tell a fresh, original story that ties in with the current films and books, but it's also the first big singleplayer-focused Star Wars game in almost a decade.

Fallen Order takes place before the original film, following one of the last surviving Jedi, Cal Kestis. New footage of the game revealed at EA Play shows Kestis and his droid BD-1 exploring the forest world of Kashyyk, assisting rebel operative Saw Gerrera (played again by Forrest Whitaker) and engaging a range of different troopers in battle with his lightsaber.
