There were zero children being held on remand in Brisbane’s police watchhouse as of Wednesday morning.
The milestone was reached after disturbing revelations about children as young as 10 being kept in maximum security watchhouses “like animals” were aired in recent months.

Department of Youth Justice director-general Bob Gee said an extra 24 beds in the state’s youth detention centres, which became available after recent security upgrades, had helped ease the crisis.
He said one child was being held in remand this morning, at the Mount Isa watchhouse, while five children had been arrested overnight.
Mr Gee said it was a good day but “we’re definitely not out of the woods yet”.
