“All good. Ready to go. I felt really good batting there in particular. I was a bit worried about throwing yesterday. It wasn’t the most comfortable thing over the last few days in Perth but getting here and batting yesterday and today, and throwing a fair bit gave me a lot of confidence.

Finch acknowledged that he had been in doubt a few days earlier.

“It didn’t progress all that quickly,” he said. “It was something that I’ve never had before. I feel fine now.”

The news was considerably less promising for Tye, whose variations have made him one of Australia’s pre-eminent T20 bowlers.

Tye has left the Australian camp and is set to see a specialist in Sydney in the coming days to determine a course of treatment. However Finch conceded Tye was unlikely to feature at all in the three-match series against Sri Lanka, or the three T20s against Pakistan early next month.

An as-yet-to-be-named replacement player will join the Australian camp in Brisbane ahead of Tuesday night’s second T20 against Sri Lanka.

Finch said on Saturday that the Australians were yet to commit to an XI for Sunday.

However middle-order batsman Ashton Turner is fit to play despite only throwing underarm at training on Friday as he continues to regain full fitness after shoulder surgery earlier this year. “He’s not bowling yet,” Finch said. “[But] he’s batting, no problem at all. His throwing’s probably a little bit more limited to inside the ring, so that’s something that’s going to have to be monitored. There’s been a couple of setbacks along the way with his rehab over the last couple of months.”

Sunday’s match marks the start of a consistent run of T20s for Australia ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup on home soil.

The topic of Steve Smith’s possible return to the international captaincy continues to swirl. In 2016 Smith replaced Finch as Australian T20 captain only weeks out from the start of the World T20 tournament in India.

Finch said that as long as he performed with the bat he would avoid a repeat of that episode.

“I don’t think you’re ever assured. At the end of the day it comes down to you doing your main job first, and for me that’s making runs. If I can look after that I’m sure everything else will take care of itself. It’s honestly nothing that I’ve thought about.”
