The match between the Sydney Thunder and the Adelaide Strikers in Canberra was sensationally called off after heavy smoke entered the pitch at Manuka Oval, with points split between the two sides.

The Thunder already had enough runs on the board to win after five overs but BBL rules require a minimum of five overs in the second innings to constitute a game. Cricket Australia and the players' association are now working to develop an air quality policy, with concerns the smoke may affect the New Year's Test.

As the game started, big screens lit up the SCG with calls for donations to the RFS, with links on where to donate scattered through breaks of play.

Ahead of the match, the Sixers were forced to make a late minute change to the squad, with a right calf strain still bothering Steve O'Keefe after Wednesday's opener.

Ben Dwarshuis started off the bowling for the day, claiming an early wicket which saw Max Bryant walk with a 1-6 for Brisbane. But Chris Lynn helped the Heat show what his side was capable of, quickly racing to claim a half-century from just 20 deliveries in partnership with Sam Heazlett.

Lynn's performance was the gift that kept on giving for the Christmas Bash, hitting 11 sixes to a festive Sunday night crowd of 14891.

Despite being visibly disappointed with the 94, the remarkable effort pushed Chris Lynn to become the first male player to take home 2000 BBL runs. Lynn's achievement was made even more impressive when he confirmed after coming off that he had been struggling with a rib injury throughout the game.

The impressive setup by Lynn was continued by Matt Renshaw and James Peirson who helped the Heat's dominance over the Sixers by lifting the scoreboard to 4/169. Peirson was dismissed with 25, bringing Ben Cutting into the game for the 18th over. The duo managed to build the play to a target of 209, the highest score ever achieved against the Sixers for the Heat.

The number also equalled the Heat's highest-ever BBL score.

"It's nice to get a few runs on the board," Renshaw said after putting away 69 not out.

The Sixers were underwhelming in their come back to the pitch, with an early wicket a bad omen for Sydney's chances of reaching the 210. With Daniel Hughes bowled by Renshaw for eight, it was time for the Sixers to kick things into gear.

The effort from the men in magenta continued to disappoint, with wickets claimed against Josh Philippe and James Vince bringing the score to 3/65. The bad luck continued for Sydney, despite a stellar six hit from captain Moises Henriques that made its way onto the roof of the member's stand.

A Christmas miracle failed to come for Sydney, who finished up 7/161.
